Are Water Bottle Labels Waterproof?
Some water bottle labels are waterproof and some fall apart in an hour. The difference is the material, with the adhesive and the bottle surface playing a part. Here is how to tell which is which.
The short answer
It depends on the material. A label printed on waterproof film survives condensation, ice and handling. A paper label does not. If the bottle will be cold or wet at any point, choose a waterproof film.
Waterproof versus water-resistant
A waterproof label does not absorb water at all. A water-resistant label tolerates a splash but can still swell, lift or tear after long exposure. For a bottle sitting in ice or sweating in a fridge, you want waterproof.
Paper labels
Paper, including kraft and metallic paper, absorbs water. On a cold bottle, condensation soaks into the paper, the print can smudge and the label can wrinkle or lift. Paper is fine for dry bottles, such as a gift on a shelf, and not for chilled water.
Film labels
Films such as PET, vinyl and BOPP do not absorb water, so the label itself stays intact. staynish prints on white and clear waterproof PET film. White film gives an opaque label with strong colour; clear film gives a transparent, printed-on-the-bottle look.
Why the adhesive and the bottle surface matter
A waterproof label still needs to stay stuck. Apply it to a clean, dry bottle and press it down firmly, especially at the edges. Applying a label to a wet or dusty bottle is the most common cause of a film label lifting.
A simple soak test at home
- Apply a sample label to a clean, dry bottle
- Leave it for a day so the adhesive settles
- Fill the bottle with cold water and stand it in ice water for an hour
- Check the edges, the print and the surface for lifting or smudging
Which should you choose?
Chilled, iced or handled bottles need waterproof film. Dry, short-term or gift bottles can use paper. When in doubt, choose film, since the cost of a failed label is higher than the cost of the better material.
Frequently asked questions
Is paper ever waterproof?
Plain paper is not. It absorbs water, so it is only suitable for bottles that stay dry.
Will a label peel in the fridge?
A waterproof film label stays intact, and holds well when applied to a clean, dry bottle. Paper labels are likely to wrinkle or lift in the fridge.
Can I wash a labelled bottle?
Light hand-washing is gentler on any label than a long soak or a dishwasher. Choose waterproof film for a reusable bottle and avoid prolonged soaking.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?
Waterproof material does not absorb water. Water-resistant material tolerates splashes but can still be damaged by long exposure.
